Japan has handed over to the people of Lango Region the boreholes that have been constructed under the “Project for Improvement of Access to Safe water in three districts in Lango Sub region” funded by its Grants Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).

The 152 million Uganda shilling Grant was signed between the Embassy of Japan and Caritas Lira in January this year to construct nine (9) boreholes in Lira, Alebtong and Dokolo districts.

“With peace restored in the region, the social infrastructures have to be further developed” said H. E. Kazuo Minagawa, Ambassador of Japan to Uganda, during the official handover that took place in OmitoVillage, AbiaSub-county in AlebtongDistrict. He added that Japan would be happy to create safe water points which areessential in facilitating the resettlement of IDPs.

The donation by Japan this time is part of the GGP scheme administered by the Japanese Embassy to support community development projects to uplift the life of grassroots people. So far, 147 projects have been funded under the scheme in Uganda since its inception in Uganda in 1992.

Japan, steadily promoting ownership of and partnership with African countries through Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) process, is committed to boosting economic growth, achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and consolidating peace and good governance in Africa.
